Cristian Mungiu simply amazing!

He became famous in 2007 after winning the Cannes festival and La Palme d’or with the movie „4 Months, 3 weeks and 2 days”. I have to admit that even for me, that was the moment when I started watching his movies. And… I can’t have enough, he’s just brilliant!!!

He started with commercials, then, in 2000 he made 3 short movies, „Zapping”, „Nici o intamplare” and „Corul pompierilor”. In 2005 he participated at a „movie” made by several directors „Lost and Found”, directing the episode „Turkey Girl”.

He directed 3 movies so far and the 3 of them are great!

The first one in 2000 „West” (Occident in Romanian) is the story of the actual Romanian society, the policeman who will find a way to solve all his problems, the guy that managed to leave Romania before ’89 and never gave a sign of life to his family since then, even if the Communism ended 20 years ago, the normal people sick and tired of the current situation and dreaming about going to work abroad, and so on.The image he creates with the movie is like a perfect picture of the society.

But where Mungiu excels in my opinion is when making movies about the Communist times, in the ’80s.

„4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days” (2007) is the story of an illegal abortion during Ceausescu era. The story is tragic but in the same time Mungiu manages to recreate the late ’80s perfectly. The last years of Communism, the most cruel and difficult ones for the population.

„Tales from the Golden Age” (2009) groups several unconventional short stories, from the last years of Communism. The stories are urban myths, told in a funny way, from the perspective of ordinary people. The story of a policeman and the advantages of having this occupation during that times, the story of a Communist activist who decides to go to the countryside to instruct the poor, the story of an official visit of the French president to Bucharest and the censor of the press. As in „4, 3, 2” the period is the late ’80s, cruel and difficult for the population but known as „the Golden Age” from the point of view of Ceausescu’s regime.
